The perfect weather and the geographical location makes the state of Tamaulipas an ideal region for national and foreign tourists seeking to practice hunting and fishing.

Tamaulipas has an abundant natural richness in its 432 kilometers of coasts, dams, rivers, and freshwater lagoons that favor sport fishing. The state has fishing sites distinguished by their crystalline waters where several events take place with amazing prizes. The Marlin Fishing and the Shad International are among the most renowned fishing tournaments on the sea.

FRESH WATER FISHING

Falcon International Dam

This dam is located on the Bravo River within the Nueva Ciudad Guerrero municipalities and the Zapata and Starr (Texas) counties, going through the no. 2 highway connecting Nuevo Laredo with Ciudad Guerrero and Cd. Mier. Besides its function to control floods, it is an excellent choice for sport fishing. It is possible to catch species such as: bass, catfish, tilapia, and bream.

Las Blancas Dam

This dam is located within the Cd. Mier municipality, in the Reynosa- Nuevo Laredo highway. Fishermen have the opportunity to find different species. Several important tournaments take place during the year.

Marte R. Gómez Dam

Located northeast of the state, 210 km from Monterrey going through the highway to Miguel Alemán. This dam is also known as “Sugar Lake”, and it is considered the most important fishing resource on the Camargo municipality as it occupies 50% of its surface. In its waters, several species can be found, such as sea bass, carp, catfish, gar, and prawn.

Vicente Guerrero Dam

Located at the Padilla and Villa de Casas municipalities, going through the Cd. Victoria – Matamoros 110 highway, this dam is considered one of the most important in the country for sport fishing practice. It is a Paradise for fishermen that have managed to catch large bass species.

Emilio Portes Gil Dam

Located on the Xicoténcatl municipality, going through the Mante – Cd. Victoria 85 highway, it is another excellent option for bass fishing. On its banks you will find fishing establishments that provide everything you need.

Pedro J. Mendez Dam

It is located at the Hidalgo municipality, 87 kilometers north of Cd. Victoria. If you travel by the Cd. Victoria-Monterrey highway, after 77 kilometers you will reach the town of Tomaseño. From there take the detour headed for Hidalgo. Access to the dam is indicated in 12 km, and you arrive after 600 meters.

Estudiante Ramiro Caballero Dam

Visits to this dam belonging to the Gonzalez municipality are accessible traveling by highway 80, just a few minutes from the Magiscatzin Bridge.  It is ideal for bass fishing.

Lavaderos Dam

This dam is located on the Tampico- Soto la Marina 180 highway, passing the República Española Dam. Even though small, there’s a chance to catch a bass.

República Española Dam

Located on the 78 kilometer in the Tampico – Matamoros 180 federal highway headed for Soto la Marina. This dam is within the Aldama municipality. It is also known as “El Sombrerito”, a beautiful place with plenty of water vegetation where some large bass species can be caught.

SALTWATER FISHING

Sport fishing in saltwater is very popular and it is practiced on beaches, on the mouth of rivers, on Laguna Madre, and at high sea. Within the state, it mainly takes place in Bagdad and El Mezquital beaches in Matamoros, La Pesca and Tepehuajes in Soto la Marina, Barra del Toldo in Aldama, and on beaches in Altamira and Cd. Madero, including the mouth of the Pánuco River in the metropolitan area south of the state. The most sought species are: croakers, horse mackerel, wahoo, skipjack tuna, large shads, and blue marlin.

Among the saltwater fishing tournaments, the most prominent internationally are the marlin fishing tournament organized by the Tampico Yacht Club and the International Shad Fishing Tournament organized by the Corona Regatta Club.
