In this municipality, San José is one of the most visited sites as it is located within the elevated section of the El Cielo biosphere. Gómez Farías is located on the middle section of the state on the water basin of the Guayalejo river. The Ecologic Interpretative Center (CIE, acronym in Spanish), in the municipal capital, organizes guided tours where they explain to you everything you may find within the El Cielo reserve.
ECOTURISM AND ADVENTURE
El Cielo biosphere reserve
Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and one of the wonders in Mexico, “El Cielo” biosphere is the most spectacular protected natural area in the Mexican Northeast. In this reserve you may find marine life fossils, as well as archeological traces and a wide variety of flora and fauna.
At night you’ll be amazed contemplating magical skies through clearings while relaxing to sounds of nature.
You may also participate in several ecotourism and adventure tourism activities such as kayaking, rappelling, hiking, boat riding, camping, mountain biking, bird sighting and ziplines. It has approximately 144 thousand 539 hectares and it is comprised by four municipalities: Gómez Farías, Ocampo, Llera and Jaumave.
Bocatoma
Bocatoma is located 13 km from the municipality’s capital. You will find restaurants and can participate in activities on the cold river shores such as: boat rides, kayaking, swimming and bird sighting.
